Pregnancy Care
Toxoplasmosis testing

This blood test looks for antibodies that might show if there has been any contact with this parasite. If a woman becomes infected for the first time in pregnancy there is a chance that the parasite can be transported to the fetus and cause birth defects. Although an infection is rare, it makes medical sense to test for this parasite early in the pregnancy to see if antibodies are present. If not, the precautions should be made to avoid eating raw meat, fish and mild. The kitty litter should not be changed by a pregnant woman, but there is no danger in touching or petting a cat.
In woman that have no antibodies, further testing should be considered every 3 months during the pregnancy.
